Surgery


Should your pet require a surgical procedure, rest assured that our
doctors have many years experience in surgery.

Non-emergency surgeries are performed daily, Monday - Friday. 

Emergency procedures can be performed when indicated any day.  We have an excellently equipped surgical suite to perform routine procedures such as spays  and neuters to more complicated orthopedic and cancer surgeries. We also have a board-certified veterinary surgeon available to come in as needed for specialized procedures.  If we feel that an outside surgical specialist is needed for a particular  case, we will gladly refer you to their offices.

Anesthesia is a critical aspect of all surgeries.  Some procedures can be done with local anesthesia, but most require general anesthesia. Prior to any anesthetic procedure, a thorough exam will be done. Laboratory blood tests will be recommended for most patients.  The blood tests help us screen for underlying problems that may influence  the anesthesia. We customize each  anesthetic protocol based upon the patient's age, breed, health condition, and procedure we are doing.  While under anesthesia all patients are closely monitored by a technician and the doctor. We also use monitors that evaluate the patient's pulse rate and integrity, respiratory function, and blood oxygen saturation. With this careful approach, anesthesia is very successful and has an extremely low complication rate. To maintain this standard, we only schedule a few anesthetic procedures per day.  
          

Animals feel pain just like we do. Since they can't talk to us, we assume they need pain- relieving medications.  Pain Management is always a top priority for your pet.   We use a variety of different medications.  The choice depends on the patient and the level of pain we expect with a certain procedure. We will give an appropriate drug to your pet prior to the anesthetic recovery. This is called preemptive pain management. Upon discharge, oral pain relief medication will be sent home to give your pet  during the post-operative period.
